Moonwalking in Prada

4

The devil definitely wears Prada. But out there? On the gray dust of the lunar surface? So do humans.

Remember that line from “The Devil Wears Prada” part two. The billionaire character scoffs. Says we went to the moon sixty years ago. Dismisses Mars as a triviality. Who is he. He argues the real frontier is the sun. Even named his ship Icarus. Irony? Lost on him.

He might hate crewed lunar missions. NASA loves them.

The Artemis program is back in business. And astronauts won’t just step foot on the moon; they’ll do it in high fashion. Specifically, Prada.

A Texas-Italian Collaboration

It’s a strange pairing. The fashion house from Milan teams up with Axiom Space, a private space company out of Houston. Together they built the suits for Artemis 3 and Artemis 4.

These aren’t bulky balloons from the seventies. They are sleek. Designed for mobility without sacrificing safety against cosmic radiation. Maybe most importantly? They actually fit people. Adjustable features accommodate a wider range of body types.

Unveiled at the International Astronautical Congress in back in 2024. Right where it hurt: Milan.

The Timeline

April happened. Artemis 2 launched. Four astronauts flew past the moon. A flyby. No landing. Just a look.

The real show waits until 2027. That’s Artemis 3. The crew will test these new Prada suits in low Earth orbit first. See how they bend. See how they hold up.

Then 2028 arrives. Artemis 4 lifts off late that year. Humans on the surface again for the first time since 1972. The first woman touches the ground too.

Establish a moon base. Use it as a springboard.

That is the NASA play. Build a presence there. Eventually hop to Mars. For now they walk on the moon. In style.

Prada owns the space fashion niche. At least for now. But time moves fast in the industry. Maybe Dior drops a 2028 collection next. Maybe they don’t.
