Water vapor is everywhere. It sits in clouds. It rises from the cooling towers of nuclear power plants. It acts as a potent greenhouse gas.
In fact, it is the single most powerful driver of the greenhouse effect on Earth. Water vapor accounts for roughly 60% of the planet’s natural heat retention. If you include the heat-trapping capacity of clouds themselves, that number jumps to nearly 90%.
But here is the catch.
Humans are not directly pumping this vapor into the sky in any meaningful way. The vast majority of atmospheric water vapor comes from natural cycles. Evaporation from oceans, lakes, and soil. Transpiration from plants. This natural loop is essential. Without it, Earth’s average temperature would plummet to -18°C. We would be a frozen rock.
So why don’t we worry about nuclear steam?
Time is the factor. Water vapor is fleeting. It stays in the atmosphere for only a few days before condensing and falling back to Earth as rain or snow. Compare that to carbon dioxide. CO2 lingers for about a century. It builds up. It accumulates.
Because water vapor has such a short lifespan, human emissions of it play a negligible role in the long-term warming trend. We aren’t adding enough of it to change the global balance. The greenhouse effect from water vapor is a feedback loop, not a primary cause of the current climate crisis.
The real culprit remains the gases that stick around.
