Evidence suggests we haven’t always kept it. We keep returning to the act, only to pull back again. Why?
Researchers from Poland’s University of Wrocław and Czechia’s Charles University didn’t look to anthropology or folklore. They looked to math. Specifically, they built a model to weigh the caloric risks against the biological costs. Their conclusion, published in PNAS, is grimly pragmatic: regular cannibalism is a population killer. It is simply not sustainable.
The Epidemiological Cost of Eating Your Own Kind
You might argue that human meat is just meat. It provides nutrients. In a dire, survival-level emergency, eating it might keep you alive for another week. The model accounts for that. But the math quickly shows why that short-term gain is a long-term disaster.
The problem lies in disease transmission.
When you eat other animals, you’re introducing foreign pathogens into your body. Your immune system deals with them as invaders. But when you eat a member of your own species, the pathogens are already adapted to your biology. They don’t face the same barriers. The likelihood of infection spikes.
This creates a feedback loop. If you eat someone who was also a cannibal, you are consuming the accumulated risk of previous meals. The “cannibal chains” get longer. The viral and bacterial load increases. The result is a community that collapses under the weight of incurable disease.

The cultural taboo against cannibalism didn’t just emerge from moral discomfort. It acted as an effective shield. It protected our ancestors from an evolutionary trap where the food source was also the vector for extinction.
The Only Scenario That Makes Sense
So, is there ever a time when it’s “okay” to eat a human? According to the researchers, barely.
The model identifies a very narrow set of conditions where cannibalism doesn’t immediately doom a group. It only makes sense if:
- Food scarcity is extreme; there is simply nothing else to eat.
- The human consumed is already dead. No energy is wasted in hunting.
- The meat is cooked thoroughly to mitigate pathogens.
- You are not eating someone who was themselves a cannibal.
Break any of those rules, and the risks skyrocket. The model shows that beyond this fragile window, the danger compounds. A community that relies on this practice doesn’t survive. It dies off.
Real-World Proof: The Fore and Kuru
This isn’t just theoretical modeling. History offers a horrifyingly clear example.
The Fore people of Papua New New Guinea faced a devastating outbreak of a fatal brain disease called kuru. Kuru is a prion disease caused by misfolded proteins. Unlike bacteria or viruses, prions cannot be killed by cooking. They survive the fire.
The disease spread through ritualistic endocannibalism—eating the dead as part of funeral rites. It wiped out entire segments of the population. The epidemic only faded after the community abandoned the practice.
This case illustrates how epidemiological dynamics can shape culture. Norms that seem arbitrary or purely “moral” are often rooted in survival. Cannibalism was locally adaptive in the moment—calories were calories—but globally destabilizing for the species.
The Social Payoff and Future Risks
The study acknowledges it doesn’t cover everything. There are likely social reasons for cannibalism beyond starvation.
In some historical contexts, eating enemies might have been a way to assert dominance. To terrorize neighboring tribes. To break taboos and strike fear into rivals. This isn’t about nutrition; it’s about signaling power.
Formalizing those social benefits requires different mathematical frameworks—signaling theory, intergroup competition models. The current study focuses on the biological bottom line. It shows that the biological costs of cannibalism are so high that any social or tactical benefits must be incredibly significant to offset them.
Probably not worth it.
We rarely see cannibalism today. We’ve largely moved past it, driven by culture, law, and the lingering fear of the diseases that come with the territory. But the calculations suggest something darker: early humans who ignored the taboo likely wiped themselves off the map. We survived because we learned to stop.
